A World of Warcraft: Forever player is developing a first-person mod designed to let players experience Azeroth through their character’s eyes. Known as Retro Forever, the project is being created by modder Arhkain and draws inspiration from classic fantasy RPGs including Morrowind and Hexen.
Arhkain has published two development vlogs explaining the project’s progress. According to the modder, the lack of suitable options for playing World of Warcraft: Forever from a first-person perspective led to the creation of a custom solution.
Retro Forever aims to provide a fully immersive first-person presentation across activities such as combat, cooking and flying. The project currently uses modified assets from Morrowind and Hexen, alongside a custom user interface and animations linked to particular spells and abilities.
For example, a mage casting a spell will see a custom animation representing the character performing that ability. The mod is described as a combination of existing addons, although it currently supports only a selection of mage spells and other class abilities.
Retro Forever is not publicly available yet. Its scope is expected to grow, and an artist has expressed interest in joining the project to create original assets. Arhkain has also said generative AI would not help with the mod’s development.
World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled to release on 4 November, while Retro Forever remains an ongoing work in progress.
