Andy Weir has an idea for a new Star Wars story: return to the Galactic Civil War, but follow people whose experiences have not been explored. In an interview with SlashFilm on November 2, the author of The Martian and Project Hail Mary said another large-scale conflict after the heroes have won could feel unsatisfying.
Weir argued that the Galactic Civil War offers room for stories beyond the events already established in the franchise. He compared the approach to fictional stories set during World War II, which explore individual lives within a conflict whose broad history is already known. He also cautioned that he was offering an opinion, not speaking as a filmmaker or as George Lucas.
Weir praised Andor, the Star Wars series set shortly before the Galactic Civil War, for its writing and its focus on different characters involved in the rebellion. But he said its expansive, intellectual story would not translate easily into a two-hour film, which would need to tell a more contained story.
In the same SlashFilm interview, Weir also discussed artificial intelligence, saying he believes it is only a matter of time before the technology becomes widespread in careers such as writing. He said he might be among the last generation of fully human writers.
