Atuel is a short, free documentary game based on the real Atuel River in western Argentina. The roughly 25-minute experience follows a journey downstream, with players taking control of water, clouds and local wildlife across dreamlike landscapes inspired by Patagonia.

The river’s story is accompanied by commentary from scientists and historians, who discuss the Atuel and its relationship with the human cultures it has supported. The game also shifts from tranquil freshwater scenes to wildfires and dry riverbeds as it addresses the climate crisis and the need to protect the natural world.

Developed by Matajuegos, Atuel combines surreal scenery with a restrained soundtrack and gradual views of the Andes. The game is available for free on Steam and itch.io; itch.io also offers a pay-what-you-want option.
