The opening act of a custom campaign mod for Baldur's Gate 3 has been released, injecting an adventure set within the World of Warcraft universe into Larian Studios' RPG. Titled Forsaken, this ambitious project comes from modder SquallyDaBeanz, who previously expanded the second act of BG3's main story with a new explorable region. Unlike their previous work, this creation abandons the Dungeons & Dragons setting for a narrative focused on undead slaves rising up after being freed from serving a Lich King.
According to SquallyDaBeanz, players take control of one of the Forsaken, an undead character who has recently awakened to find they are no longer bound to the Lich King. The objective is to find a place in this new world alongside other freed undead while fighting to reclaim the kingdom of Lordaeron. This custom campaign, designed for characters at levels 1 through 5, features activities such as hunting fierce beasts, exploring forgotten ruins, ending dark rituals, slaying zealots, and discovering magical items.
The setting is based on the Tirisfal Glades region found in both classic and vanilla versions of World of Warcraft. The mod is deliberately disconnected from the world of Baldur's Gate, with SquallyDaBeanz aiming to emulate WoW's design philosophy. While the initial release only covers the first act, it offers more than 20 quests across a map designed to feel expansive. Although it may not be as densely packed with secrets as vanilla BG3's professionally crafted locales, players can explore towns, settlements, and dungeons.
Adventurers will be accompanied by a party of up to three specially built companions: a fighter named Darnell, a mage called Isabella, and a cleric named Duesten. These characters can be found at the Deathknell Chapel. SquallyDaBeanz noted that the current implementation of these companions is temporary, existing purely to ensure a full party for combat encounters, with a complete overhaul planned for a future update.
The current version of the mod is heavily focused on combat and is fairly linear compared to the base game, a trait common among many works-in-progress custom campaigns. While there are NPCs and traders available for interaction, the narrative depth is currently limited. Looking ahead, the modder has not provided an estimate for a second act but has outlined plans to add more quests, class dialogue, skill checks, items, lore books, idle animations, and cutscenes to the opening act in future updates.
To experience Forsaken, users must download the main file and follow the installation instructions provided in the mod's description on Nexus Mods. Once installed, players need to enable Forsaken via BG3's in-game mod manager located in the main menu and start a new game to begin their journey in this World of Warcraft-inspired setting.
