The Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099 has been confirmed to have no direct connection to the events of the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049. Showrunner Silka Luisa revealed this decision in an interview with SFX magazine, stating that the goal was to create a completely independent narrative. By distancing the project from the previous movie, the producers aim to make the series accessible to new audiences who have not seen the earlier films.
Consequently, the show will not include significant plot points from the 2017 installment, such as the discovery of the first child born to a Replicant. The story is set 50 years after the last film and depicts a world where Replicants have taken control following a revolt, reducing humans to second-class citizens.
The main cast features Michelle Yeoh as Olwen, an aging Replicant Blade Runner nearing the end of her life. Hunter Schafer also stars in the series, playing Cora, a human who is posing as a Replicant.
