Resident Evil’s main storyline could reach its conclusion by 2036, according to executive producer Jun Takeuchi. In an interview with Yahoo Japan, reported by IGN on October 27, 2026, he said Capcom has spent several years working to connect the series’ different entries and expects the story to conclude sometime in the next decade.

Takeuchi said the planning took shape during development of the Resident Evil 2 remake, released in 2019, when Capcom devised a ten-year strategy for the franchise. With Resident Evil Requiem arriving in 2026, he considers that initial phase complete. He stressed that ending the main storyline would not mean the end of Resident Evil as a series.

The remakes may also be part of that broader narrative plan. Takeuchi suggested their release order has a purpose and that players who follow the games may come to understand why Capcom chose to revisit certain events before others. The newer games continue the main story, while the remakes return to its earlier events; Capcom has indicated that these timelines are gradually being brought closer together.

The upcoming Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake, expected in 2027, could be significant to that effort. The original game focuses on the Redfield family and the conflict with Umbrella, despite not having a numbered title.

Takeuchi confirmed that Capcom has several more games planned before the main story ends, but did not reveal how many or what form they will take. The company has not said whether the conclusion will come in a numbered game or be spread across multiple releases, nor has it offered details about the future of long-running characters such as Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield.
