Mass Effect and Dragon Age remain deeply important to many players, and a recent petition has given fans a small reason for optimism about the future of BioWare’s franchises. The #SaveMassEffect campaign reportedly collected 200,000 signatures in just four days.
Among its proposals, the petition calls for the franchises—currently part of EA’s portfolio—to be sold to other development studios that could make better use of them. Two names have emerged in fan speculation: CD Projekt Red for Mass Effect and Larian Studios for Dragon Age.
The idea is not entirely new. More than a year ago, some Reddit users imagined Mass Effect being handled by CD Projekt Red, citing the Polish studio’s experience with technology and futuristic settings. Larian Studios, meanwhile, was suggested as a natural fit for Dragon Age because of its role in developing Baldur’s Gate 3 and its experience with medieval-style role-playing games.
There are, however, significant obstacles. CD Projekt Red is currently working on the next installment of The Witcher, referred to in the source as The Witcher 4, as well as a future Cyberpunk project. Larian is focused on its Divinity series, leaving uncertain whether either studio would have the resources to take on another major franchise.
No negotiations have begun, and it remains unknown whether they ever will. For now, EA could retain the franchises while it considers future options, potentially waiting for another competitor willing to spend heavily to acquire them.
