A dataminer has uncovered peculiar evidence within the code of Mario Kart World suggesting that Spiny was intended to be a playable driver. The discovery was made by Bluesky user Benial, who found the character's internal name, 'Togezo,' listed alongside other roster members in the game's files.

Despite this confirmation, no 3D model, animation, or specific concept for how Spiny would operate a vehicle has been found to date. This omission is notable given the character's design; Spiny is a tiny turtle-like creature with a spiky shell and an angry expression, traits that seemingly make driving difficult.

Spiny has been a staple of the Mario universe since its introduction in Super Mario Bros. in 1985, typically known as a menacing enemy rather than a racer. However, the inclusion of other unconventional characters like Boo, a ghost with no apparent means of driving, suggests that Spiny could have fit into the roster.

Mario Kart World has performed well as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, contributing to strong console sales last year. Since its release, the game has received several updates, including the addition of a battle mode and team races to its tour mode, all without the inclusion of Spiny.
