Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding franchise is expanding beyond video games into the anime medium with the release of the first teaser trailer for Death Stranding Isolations. Announced in 2025, this original net anime will feature a new narrative and protagonists distinct from those found in the main game series or its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The trailer, made public on October 30, introduces one of the two lead characters, a blonde girl haunted by visions of Beached Things (BTs), which are the souls of the dead stranded in the living world.
The anime carries the subtitle "My mom became a crater," a direct reference to voidouts, the massive explosions that occur when a BT consumes a human. Production duties fall to E&H Production, a studio founded by MAPPA veteran Sunghoo Park, known for his work on Ninja Kamui and the upcoming Magic Knight Rayearth remake. The project will be directed by Takyuki Sano, an industry veteran making his directorial debut after working on Attack on Titan: The Last Attack and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The screenplay is written by award-winning novelist Tow Ubukata, recognized for his contributions to Psycho-Pass 2 and 3.
This animated series is part of a broader expansion of the Death Stranding universe currently in development. A live-action film serving as a prequel to the games is being written and directed by Michael Sarnoski for A24. Additionally, another animated feature tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito is underway, with Aaron Guzikowski attached to write and Hiroshi Miyamoto directing; a trailer for this project was released in September. The original games depict a world devastated by an event that blurred the lines between life and death, following courier Sam Porter Bridges as he reconnects isolated colonies. While no plans exist for a third game beyond a concept draft, Death Stranding Isolations is expected to launch exclusively on Disney Plus in 2027.
