Abrams ComicArts is expanding its line of Dune graphic novels with Dune Messiah: Book 1, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1969 sequel. The first volume is scheduled for release on November 3, ahead of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three.
The adaptation is written by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, features artwork by Michael Shelfer, and has a cover by Bill Sienkiewicz. A preview was revealed before publication.
The story follows Paul Atreides after he has become Emperor of the known universe. Although the Fremen revere him as a messianic figure, rival houses fear his power, and a conspiracy begins to threaten his rule. Paul must also contend with changes in his prophetic visions as the future of his empire and those close to him becomes increasingly uncertain.
The graphic novel presents Dune Messiah as a story centered on power, religion and destiny. According to the book’s description, its artwork depicts the scale of Arrakis and the complexity of its characters while giving the novel’s conflicts a visual format.
Anderson said the adaptation seeks to remain faithful to the source material on a scene-by-scene basis. He also highlighted the importance of conveying the story’s landscapes, culture and characters through Shelfer’s artwork.
Dune Messiah: Book 2 is planned for release in 2027. Dune: Part Three is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, although the film may differ from the novel’s plot.
