Elon Musk has sparked criticism after sharing an AI-generated Star Wars image on X that presents Anakin Skywalker, Padmé Amidala, and their children as happy Imperial rulers. The post, published on November 1, was captioned “This is what they stole from us,” echoing a nostalgia meme commonly used online to lament an allegedly better past or mock that kind of criticism.
The image shows Anakin seated on a throne with Imperial Royal Guards behind him, while Padmé, Luke, and Leia appear dressed in black. The accompanying interpretation argues that the scenario depicted was never something Star Wars established as a lost possibility.
In the Star Wars story, Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader is portrayed as a tragic fall driven by his embrace of authoritarianism and his growing separation from those close to him. The original trilogy had already established that his turn to the dark side led to his ruin rather than to a successful family reign.
Padmé’s characterization also conflicts with the image’s premise. The prequel films present her as a committed believer in justice, and after discovering Anakin’s actions in Revenge of the Sith, she rejects the path he has chosen, telling him that she cannot follow it.
The Empire’s victories are likewise shown throughout the saga as acts of oppression rather than achievements to celebrate. By presenting Anakin and his family as contented Imperial leaders, the post evokes nostalgia for an outcome that never existed within the story and reverses the meaning of the characters’ arcs.
