There was a time when Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series was widely regarded as the leading force in comic book video games. Among its entries, Batman: Arkham City remains a particularly strong candidate for the best game starring the Dark Knight.

Released in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, Arkham City built on the foundations of Arkham Asylum. The sequel was presented as a substantial improvement across the game’s main areas, earning highly positive reactions from both critics and players.

The most significant change was the setting. Instead of focusing on a more confined environment, the game introduced a fully explorable open-world area known as Arkham City. Players could follow the main story while also taking on numerous secondary missions, giving Batman greater freedom of movement and action. This approach also pointed toward the broader design direction later explored in Arkham Knight.

The combat system remained close to that of the previous game, but it was refined rather than radically redesigned. Fights revolved around timed counters, defensive moves and rapid attack combinations, while Batman’s Batarangs and other gadgets added variety to encounters. The overall style closely matched the character’s fighting methods and technological arsenal.

The story also benefited from an extensive cast of well-known DC villains. Mr. Freeze, the Penguin, Two-Face, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, the Riddler and Talia all played roles in an adventure that turned the city into an open-air asylum. At its center was the troubled relationship between Batman and the Joker, which helped hold the narrative together.

With its larger world, refined gameplay and wide selection of iconic characters, Batman: Arkham City continues to be remembered as one of the strongest Batman video games, even more than fifteen years after its original release.
