The Gears of War movie remains in development at Netflix, but its future is uncertain. Director David Leitch, known for John Wick, said he hopes the film will come to fruition “soon” and that people involved are excited by the prospect of building a film universe around the series.
“I wish I could tell you more, because there’s so much cool stuff going on,” Leitch told ScreenRant. He did not share further details about the project.
The movie’s latest reported script, as of 2025, was written by Jon Spaihts, whose credits include Prometheus, Doctor Strange, Passengers and the first two Dune films. Netflix announced a deal with Microsoft in 2022 for a Gears of War movie and an animated series; the series’ status has not been detailed.
The project has changed hands before. New Line Cinema acquired the film rights in 2007, but no movie followed. The rights went to Universal in 2016, and that version also did not move forward before Netflix’s deal.
Netflix has recently seen changes in its leadership. Dan Lin left his role as film chief, and longtime chief content officer Bela Bajaria also exited. Former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice has taken over as chief content officer. The article notes that Netflix’s BioShock movie was scaled back under Lin’s leadership, but it remains unclear whether the latest management changes will affect Gears of War.
No cast has been announced. Dave Bautista has campaigned for years to play Marcus, but there is no confirmation that he will appear in the film.
