GOG is considering a future in which customers can browse its digital storefront, choose a game and have a physical edition delivered to their home. Marcin Paczynski, the company’s senior business development and partnerships manager, described the idea in an interview with GamesRadar as his ideal scenario for the store.
Making that happen would be more complicated than selling digital games. Paczynski pointed to the need to manage storage and delivery, as well as secure additional approvals from publishers. He hopes the concept can become a reality, but the company would need to overcome those practical challenges.
GOG has also explored ways to preserve the visual history of PC games. Its Preservation Program recently created high-resolution scans and 3D models of the boxes for Myst, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Armikrog. The files can be viewed on a PC, and printable versions are available for papercraft projects.
Other companies and websites have also catered to interest in physical game collections, including Limited Run Games and Special Reserve Games.
