Rockstar Games has clarified how the world of Grand Theft Auto 6 will function regarding player freedom. According to a recent interview reported by EDGE magazine, the upcoming title will adopt an approach similar to GTA V rather than the gradual map unlocking found in other predecessors. Players arriving in Leonida will not face invisible barriers or movement restrictions, allowing them to access any location within the vast game world right from the beginning.
This decision dispels earlier speculation that the electronic ankle monitor worn by the character Lucia, as seen in promotional materials, would impose limits during the first hours of gameplay. However, developers have specified that while the map opens very quickly, it will not be accessible immediately upon launching the game. Players must first complete a tutorial sequence, though no specific details regarding its duration or content have been revealed.
While this open access is viewed as positive news for those eager to explore before advancing the story, it may not grant immediate access to all gameplay mechanics. Completing main story missions will likely be required to unlock new features. For instance, luxury vehicles cannot be stolen at the start; players will probably need to progress through advanced quests to acquire the technological tools necessary to bypass their security systems. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PS5 Pro.
