John Goodman believes the critical response to Digger harmed the film before it reached theaters. Speaking with Josh Horowitz, the actor said negative headlines gave audiences a reason to stay away, while adding that he enjoyed making the movie and remains proud of it.
Digger, which stars Tom Cruise alongside Goodman, has earned $49 million so far against a reported production budget of $125 million to $180 million. Its Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 53%, making it one of Cruise’s most divisive films and his lowest-rated since 2017’s The Mummy, according to the source report.
Goodman also said he believed in the film’s message and defended it despite its mixed reception. IGN rated Digger 6 out of 10, praising its performances and humor while arguing that its satire lacked the bite needed to make its point.
The film’s eventual standing with audiences remains uncertain, and any reassessment could take years. For now, Goodman says he stands by the project.
