Macronix plans to stop producing the ROM chips used in Nintendo game cartridges as it redirects its efforts toward other memory products. The decision was outlined in the company’s financial report, which David Gibson shared on X.
Macronix is one of a small number of companies that make ROM chips for physical games on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Its departure does not point to an immediate shortage, but it could have a greater impact on cartridge supply in the medium to long term.
ROM products accounted for 5% of Macronix’s revenue between July and September 2026, down from 26% in the same period of 2025. The company has decided to respond to that decline by shifting its production focus.
