Mike Flanagan has hinted at a promising development in Amazon’s live-action Warhammer 40,000 series, which is being developed with Henry Cavill attached as both star and producer. The filmmaker said the project has found “a very cool and unexpected on-ramp,” although he declined to explain the phrase in detail.
Speaking to Deadline, Flanagan described adapting Warhammer 40,000 as an unusual challenge because of the scale of its universe. He pointed to the franchise’s hundreds of novels, along with its tabletop game, interactive elements and broader lore. Flanagan also joked that Cavill would be angry if he revealed too much about the series at this stage.
Amazon announced earlier this year that it was developing the live-action adaptation with Cavill and Flanagan involved. United Artists is also attached to the project. According to a financial report from Games Workshop, the series is probably still years away from release.
Amazon is also developing an animated Warhammer 40,000 spin-off connected to the franchise’s episode in the anthology series Secret Level. Cavill will executive-produce that project, which is being developed by Dave Wilson and John Orloff. Wilson directed the Secret Level episode, and the animated series will focus on the Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines.
The Warhammer projects are part of Amazon’s wider investment in video game adaptations. Other productions mentioned include God of War, Tomb Raider, Life is Strange and Mass Effect.
