Nexus Mods, a widely used source for game mods, will require creators to disclose the use of artificial intelligence in their submissions. The policy was announced by the site’s new owner, Victor “Foledinho” Folmann, following discussions with the community. Folmann also apologized for not addressing the issue sooner.

The site considered calls for an outright ban on AI-generated mods but decided against one. Folmann said AI is used across different stages of creation, from script autocompletion to producing textures, voices and other assets, making it difficult to draw a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable use. He argued that a ban would not remove AI from the modding process and could instead discourage creators from acknowledging it.

Under the new rules, submissions made with any form of AI must explain how and where it was used. Creators will also have to add AI tags, which will be displayed more prominently, directly after any tags for adult content. The site says AI-assisted mod creation must meet requirements covering permissions, transparency, presentation and conduct.

Nexus Mods is also changing how creators set permissions for others to use their work in derivative mods or for AI training. The default setting will be “ask me,” meaning permission must be requested in advance. Creators can instead prohibit such use or allow it freely. The changes are also intended to improve attribution.

Users will be able to adjust their settings to keep AI-assisted mods out of search results and recommendations. Nexus Mods also plans measures to prevent individual uploaders from dominating the Recently Added pages.

Folmann acknowledged that the rules will not prevent every creator from failing to disclose AI use. The site says it is establishing moderation standards and consequences for violations, and will give creators of newer mods 60 days to update their pages with the required information.
