Nexus Mods is introducing mandatory disclosures for mods that use artificial intelligence and new options for users to filter that content. The platform says it will not ban AI-assisted mods outright, arguing that AI can be involved in many parts of the creative process and that drawing a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable use is difficult.
In a blog post, co-owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann said the platform supports human creativity but believes AI use should be visible and governed by rules. He said a full ban could instead lead modders to conceal their use of AI.
Modders will have to state whether a project is AI-assisted, primarily AI-generated, or includes AI-generated promotional material. Each mod page must also include a public explanation of how and where AI was used. Users will be able to exclude AI-assisted mods through search filters or their preferences.
Existing mods have 60 days to meet the new requirements. Mods that have not been updated by January 2 could lead to restrictions on the account responsible for them.
Folmann acknowledged that users have differing views, from wanting AI-generated content prohibited to calling for fewer restrictions. He said Nexus Mods considered those preferences before deciding on rules it believes are right for the platform and its community.
