Patrick Stewart is best known for heroic roles such as Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier, but he took a very different part in Jeremy Saulnier’s 2015 thriller Green Room. The film is currently available to stream for free on Tubi.

Green Room follows the Ain’t Rights, a struggling punk band touring the Pacific Northwest. After accepting a gig at an isolated Oregon bar frequented by skinheads, the musicians witness a murder in the venue’s backstage area. The staff hold them there and call the bar’s owner, Darcy, played by Stewart, who decides to eliminate the witnesses.

The band members have little experience with violence and must improvise their way through a fight to survive. The film’s bleak setting and abrupt, graphic violence give the story a deliberately harsh tone, with characters forced to act despite their injuries and limited options.

Stewart plays Darcy as a matter-of-fact criminal who treats the violence around him as part of running his bar and drug operation. The role stands out among his comparatively rare villain performances, using the actor’s familiar authority to create a quiet, everyday menace.
