The next generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles may not begin until 2028, according to recent reports. That would put both systems later than some expected, while PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are not described as being at the end of their life cycles.
Microsoft is reportedly planning two hardware launches. An internally developed Xbox handheld could arrive during the 2027 holiday season. The report describes it as a dedicated portable console, rather than a device similar to ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally.
Xbox Helix is expected to follow in the 2028 holiday season, potentially around November. Its reported price range is $1,200 to $1,800, depending on hardware specifications that have not yet been finalized.
Microsoft and AMD have announced that FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.1 is coming to Xbox, first on the ROG Xbox Ally and later on Xbox Series X|S. Project Helix is expected to support FSR Diamond, which is intended to further enhance graphics.
PlayStation 6 could also launch in 2028. The report says the console’s price remains a concern for Sony: RAM and SSD costs alone are reportedly expected to exceed $600, potentially pushing the retail price above €1,000.
