Roger Craig Smith is the new voice of Soul, the protagonist of Phantom Blade Zero, after seemingly replacing Jay Maksenuk shortly before the game’s release. Smith is known for voicing Sonic the Hedgehog, while Maksenuk played V in Once Human.
Maksenuk’s performance remains audible in several Phantom Blade Zero trailers, but the launched version features Smith in the role. According to Game Informer, the change appears to have occurred shortly after the game’s review period began. Developer S-Game has not disclosed why the replacement was made.
Smith has also voiced Batman and Ezio Auditore in several Assassin’s Creed games, as well as Daigo Dojima in Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Alden Dorne in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
Phantom Blade Zero has surpassed 730,000 concurrent players on Steam during its launch week, according to the available figures.
