Sonic the Hedgehog will return to movie theaters this Christmas with a surprise appearance in The Angry Birds Movie 3. The film’s second trailer briefly shows Sonic racing Chuck, the fast-talking bird voiced by Josh Gad.
The scene pits Sonic against Chuck, who is known as the fastest resident of Bird Island. The trailer does not explain how Sonic enters the Angry Birds universe or whether the moment is part of the film’s main story.
The crossover follows Sega’s 2023 acquisition of Rovio, the Finnish company behind the Angry Birds games. The characters have since appeared together in several games published by Sega and Rovio, including Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends, Sonic Dash, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
The Angry Birds Movie 3 follows Red, voiced by Jason Sudeikis, as he faces fatherhood while trying to save the world from a new threat. The voice cast also includes Josh Gad, Emma Myers, Rachel Bloom, Walker Scobell, Danny McBride and Keke Palmer.
The Angry Birds Movie 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 23. Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the next live-action film in the series, is slated for release on March 19, 2027. A separate Sonic spinoff is planned for Dec. 22, 2028.
