Sony Pictures and Lionsgate have confirmed a partnership on the live-action Naruto movie directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Lionsgate will oversee production and domestic distribution, with Sony Pictures responsible for international distribution. Lionsgate said Sony’s experience with anime and manga made it a strong partner for the project.

The film has been greenlit by Lionsgate and is targeting a production start in spring 2027. No cast has been confirmed. Charles Melton was reportedly in talks to play Kakashi in August, but that has not been announced as casting.

Cretton said he has been a longtime fan of Naruto and praised the story’s blend of action, humor and humanity. He added that the filmmakers aim to capture what fans value about the series while introducing it to a new generation.
