Sony has initiated a direct buyback program offering up to $400 to owners willing to sell their PlayStation 5 consoles along with two controllers. As first spotted by ResetEra user Jay_Horror, the company is sending notifications through the PlayStation mobile app to eligible fans. These messages inform users that they can trade in their hardware directly to Sony, with funds deposited straight into their bank accounts.

While trade-in promotions are common among retailers like GameStop, especially during the holiday season, it is unusual for a platform holder to approach customers directly for used stock. This strategy may indicate that Sony is preparing for potential hardware shortages or seeking pre-owned units to resell at prices lower than brand-new models. Currently, standard PS5 consoles retail between $600 and $650 depending on the disc drive configuration, while the premium PS5 Pro costs $900.

High demand for the PS5 Pro ahead of the Grand Theft Auto 6 release has made it difficult to find at retail price, driving resellers and retailers to list used units for as much as $1,400. For consumers who purchased a PS5 before recent price increases and no longer use it, this offer presents a significant value. Given that the console originally launched at $500, receiving $400 back—provided an additional controller is included—is a strong return compared to typical trade-in values seen during the later stages of the PS4 lifecycle.
