Takashi Yamazaki says he set aside the pressure to make Godzilla Minus Zero bigger or more successful than Godzilla Minus One, arguing that the urge to surpass the previous film could have weakened the qualities that made it work.
“I think it's very dangerous to create a movie with that type of mindset,” Yamazaki told IGN in an interview near Godzilla Minus Zero’s debut at the New York Film Festival. He said focusing on scale and awards risked diluting the appeal of the original and could become an obstacle during production.
Godzilla Minus One, released in 2023, was praised for its human-focused story and visual effects. It became the highest-grossing Godzilla film to date and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2024. Yamazaki said the film’s global reception and awards were beyond what the team had expected, and acknowledged that making a sequel brought pressure.
He said his turning point came when he stopped worrying about topping the previous film and focused instead on making an entertaining movie with a message. “You know what? I'm just going to make a fun movie,” he recalled thinking.
Godzilla Minus Zero is a larger production, with a bigger budget confirmed by Yamazaki. The film also features an additional kaiju and is the first Godzilla movie to receive an R rating, as well as the first Japanese film shot specifically for IMAX screens. It opens in the United States on November 6; it opened in Japan on November 3 for Godzilla Day.
