Nathan Johnson, elected Texas attorney general, previously composed music for the English dub of Dragon Ball Z. He said he worked on scores for 67 episodes and five movies of the anime franchise.

Johnson shared the story in a June 22 Facebook post, describing how the work brought together his musical career and family life. At the time, he had a one-year-old child who watched the show with him, and Johnson recalled his son recognizing Goku on screen.

Before joining Funimation, Johnson had studied law but put his legal career on hold to pursue music. He met Robert Cocanaugher, one of Funimation’s co-founders, while looking for a place to rent as an office. The conversation turned to music, and Johnson was eventually hired as the second composer for the company’s in-house English dub of Dragon Ball Z.

In a 2012 interview with The Dao of Dragon Ball, Johnson said he had been close to abandoning his struggling music career when he encountered Cocanaugher. He recalled that he had never watched Dragon Ball or an anime series, and had not previously composed for a commercial project.

Johnson was elected attorney general in the November 3 midterm elections. The source reports that he is the first Democratic candidate to win the Texas office since 1994.
