The Droid Gotra, an independent group of emancipated droids serving as security for the Hutt Twins, drew inspiration from an unexpected source: Harry Hook’s 1990 film adaptation of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies.’ The design influence is revealed in ‘The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ a behind-the-scenes book by Phillip Szostak arriving Nov. 3, 2026.

A preview of a two-page spread, shared exclusively with Polygon, includes concept art from the film and details how the faction’s look was developed. Concept artist Brian Matyas said the designs combine familiar droid features with tribal and low-tech details, layered clothing, mismatched parts and paint. He summed up the mix as “Lord of the Flies meets junker cars.”

The preview also features artwork of Din Djarin fighting a giant albino Dragonsnake beneath the Hutt Twins’ chamber on Nal Hutta. The book includes additional concept art and sketches, along with interviews with cast members, crew and other creatives involved in the film.
