Toonstruck marks 30 years since its release on November 4, 1996. Developed by Burst Studios, the point-and-click adventure combined live-action footage with hand-drawn animation, building a distinctive cartoon world around a cast led by Christopher Lloyd.
Lloyd plays Drew Blanc, a cartoonist frustrated by his work on the sugary Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show. After being pulled into his television, Drew finds himself in Cutopia, where he joins the animated character Flux Wildly to confront Count Nefarious. The villain, voiced by Tim Curry, is turning cute things evil. Dan Castellaneta voices Flux.
The game’s supporting cast also includes Ben Stein, David Ogden Stiers, Dom DeLuise and Jeff Bennett. Its animation draws on cartoon traditions ranging from Tex Avery to Disney, while its puzzles sit at the heart of the adventure. Some content, including an offensive slur and an incongruous scene involving barnyard animals, has aged poorly.
A sequel was planned, but the original game’s troubled development and disappointing commercial performance meant it never became a series. Toonstruck is now playable through ScummVM, with the setup handled for buyers of the Steam version. The game runs for around 10 hours, making it longer than many adventures of its era.
