Xbox Game Pass could be headed for another overhaul. According to Fortune, Microsoft CEO Asha Sharma is considering a more flexible subscription that would let users select optional features and pay only for the ones they want, rather than getting them all as part of a broad package.
The service would still have multiple tiers, but subscribers might be able to add features such as cloud gaming, online multiplayer or access to games exclusive to Xbox consoles. The reported approach could help Microsoft keep prices down by removing less-used features from some plans, while charging extra for options that appeal to particular subscribers.
The potential changes could also affect the availability of games from Xbox’s own studios on launch day. The report says Microsoft may move away from including those titles immediately, and points to Premium Edition upgrades, which have offered early access to some games for an additional $30, as a possible sign of that direction.
The report links the review to Game Pass subscriber growth falling short of Microsoft’s 100 million target, with the service said to have stalled at around 35 million subscribers. Earlier this year, Microsoft reduced prices while dropping day-one access to Call of Duty.
