The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 has secured its position as the best game of 2026 according to Metacritic. This achievement comes after 80 critical reviews were published in the first hours following the end of the review embargo.
This modern reimagining of the 1998 N64 classic has garnered significant acclaim from critics, currently holding an average score of 96. This high rating is sufficient to place it at the top of the year's rankings on the aggregator.
Furthermore, a score of 96 ranks the remake as one of the 30 best games of all time, specifically landing at number 24 on the list. Notably, this all-time ranking is led by the original N64 version of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which holds an aggregate score of 99.
While the imminent release of GTA 6 may challenge the remake's standing in the near future, it currently retains the title of the year's best-rated game on Metacritic.
