Most PlayStation 4 games sold on disc can be played without an internet connection. Sony’s documentation says disc games do not need an online check to authenticate or launch: insert the Blu-ray, install its contents to the console’s hard drive and start playing. The disc must remain in the console while the game is in use.
This means many single-player titles work on a PS4 that is completely offline, without regular license checks from Sony’s servers. However, a physical copy does not always contain everything needed to play.
Some games require additional downloads to complete their content or installation. The original release of Spyro Reignited Trilogy, for example, required downloads for some levels in Spyro 2 and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II also requires additional content to be downloaded for installation.
Games that need a continuous connection to their servers are another exception: owning the disc does not make them playable offline. Players should check whether a title’s content is complete on the disc and whether it can be used without online services.
