Helen Chiang has pushed back against online speculation surrounding her unexpected departure from Microsoft, saying the claims do not accurately describe what happened. She left the company after 21 years, just three months after taking on the role of Xbox chief operating officer.

In a LinkedIn post, Chiang said she did not want to discuss every detail, but stressed that her decision not to elaborate should not be treated as confirmation of the rumors. She said the accounts of her exit had created a picture of her that she barely recognized.

Chiang denied leaking confidential information to the press, having unapproved contact with journalists, or planning to move to another company. She also rejected allegations involving discrimination, harassment, insider information, embezzlement or other fraudulent activity.

Asha Sharma, Xbox’s current chief executive, confirmed Chiang’s departure in a statement that did not explain the decision. That lack of detail prompted speculation about disagreements with the current leadership or possible breaches of company policies.

Chiang said she had hoped to continue building at Xbox, describing her connection to the company as more than a career stop. She added that she did not want her departure reduced to an inaccurate account based on incompetence, ambition or scandal.
