Mount Chiliad is one of GTA 5’s most recognisable landmarks, but the mountain became known for more than its height and views. A UFO can appear above it after players complete the story, and a mural inside the nearby tram station has prompted years of speculation about what secrets the game may contain.
The mural shows an eye above the mountain, lightning outside it and a network of lines leading to symbols that include a UFO, a cracked egg and a person wearing a jetpack. Players have connected some of its clues to hidden petroglyphs, weather conditions and the 50 spaceship parts scattered across San Andreas. Other interpretations remain disputed.
The jetpack symbol, for instance, could refer to a jetpack used in a GTA Online mission involving a nuclear facility. Some players have instead linked it to the UFO above Fort Zancudo. The cracked egg has inspired theories involving the Epsilon cult, a Los Santos fountain and an underwater UFO near Paleto Bay.
Fans began investigating the mystery together on Reddit shortly after GTA 5 launched, and the community has continued to share new theories. Some suggest clues extend to other Rockstar games or to material that was never officially released. A video published last year argued that the mural points to a simpler explanation: the F.I.B. logos on the UFOs and the eye in the mural represent an all-seeing government, in a satirical reference to ideas such as the Illuminati.
There is no definitive answer that has ended the debate. One long-running argument is that GTA 5’s files contain no evidence of a usable jetpack or flyable UFO, but that has not stopped players from searching for connections across the game.
The mystery’s unresolved nature is part of its appeal. Rather than being solved quickly, Mount Chiliad gave players a shared puzzle to revisit for years. That experience offers a model for GTA 6: a similarly layered mystery could keep fans theorising long after they have finished the main story.
