Indie game storefront itch.io has expanded its AI disclosure filters, adding a “No AI” option to its search page. Users can select the box to hide games that disclose the use of generative AI, the platform said in a post on its official BlueSky account.
Games made using generative AI must carry a disclosure to appear on itch.io. Unlike Steam, however, itch.io does not offer developers a way to specify how extensively the technology was used, according to the report.
The change follows a recent increase in new game pages on the site: itch.io said their daily number had doubled over the previous two months. Downloads and purchases have not risen at the same rate, while the platform has also raised concerns about the file sizes associated with AI-generated uploads. It has a terms-of-service policy against AI spam and said it had deleted “a couple terabytes” of AI slop.
The broader influx of AI-made games has also affected Steam. Steam Next Fest received a record number of demo submissions last month, and some developers withdrew demos over concerns that their games could be copied. Steam said developers were responsible for making their games less susceptible to copying.
itch.io’s filter gives users a way to exclude games that disclose generative AI use, as the platform manages the growing volume of submissions and uploads.
