itch.io plans to let users filter search results to exclude projects that disclose Generative AI use. The change follows the platform’s admission that its previous moderation of AI use was “critically lacking.”
The disclosure requirement, which has applied to game assets for two years, will also cover tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks. itch.io said the number of game pages created each day had doubled over the past two months. It also said it had recently deleted a couple of terabytes of AI-generated content.
The new search filter will give users a way to avoid projects that declare AI use, but it does not amount to a site-wide ban. Disclosures remain central to itch.io’s approach as it expands the policy to more kinds of creator projects.
