Maya Hawke has been cast in a lead role in Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro’s live-action Magic: The Gathering film, according to reports from Deadline and reporter Daniel Richtmann. The project is directed by Matt Johnson, who is co-writing the screenplay with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. Hawke’s character has not been revealed, though one report describes the part as a key role.
The casting marks the first actor attached to the adaptation of the trading card game. Hawke is known for playing Robin Buckley in Stranger Things and Anxiety in Pixar’s Inside Out 2, as well as for her role in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City.
Johnson has described himself as a longtime Magic: The Gathering fan. In an interview on The Big Picture podcast earlier this year, he said he had once dreamed of becoming a professional Magic player. He also called the game “my Star Wars” and said returning to a world he knew and loved was surreal.
Legendary and Hasbro announced plans in February 2025 for a live-action film and television universe based on Magic: The Gathering. Hasbro is also developing an animated series for Netflix, with Terry Matalas serving as showrunner and executive producer.
