Nintendo has officially identified the studio responsible for the highly anticipated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. While the company is known for maintaining strict secrecy regarding its development teams to preserve a sense of wonder around its brand, an 'Ask the Developer' article posted by Nintendo has confirmed that the project is being led by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) Production Group No. 3.
The confirmation comes after interviews with six developers involved in the project. Four of these interviewees are members of Production Group No. 3, the team long associated with creating mainline Zelda titles. The remaining two are Eiji Aonuma, the series producer and former manager of Group No. 3, and Hidemaro Fujibayashi, a director who has helmed several recent entries in the franchise.
Prior to this announcement, speculation had pointed toward other studios due to their history with the series. The previous Ocarina of Time remake for the Nintendo 3DS was developed by Grezzo, which also handled the 3DS version of Majora's Mask and led development on 2024's The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Additionally, Monolith Soft, a studio owned by Nintendo known for the Xenoblade series, was considered a strong candidate. Monolith has provided support for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and is currently developing Xenoblade Genesis, scheduled for release in 2027 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Although some fans may have hoped the main Zelda team would focus exclusively on a new original installment rather than a remake, it remains possible that Production Group No. 3 is managing both projects with assistance from support studios. The involvement of Grezzo and Monolith in other titles suggests they may be freed up for future projects, such as a sequel to Echoes of Wisdom or the upcoming Xenoblade game. A complete list of all studios contributing to the Ocarina of Time remake will be revealed when the game launches on November 5.
