The score puts it ahead of the other games listed among the year’s best-reviewed releases, though Grand Theft Auto 6 could still enter the running.
Metacritic’s rankings place twin-stick shooter Sektori in second, with a 93 based on 10 reviews. The Switch 2 Deluxe Edition of the Resident Evil 2 remake also has a score of 93, based on 16 reviews. More reviews of Ocarina of Time may be added, but the ranking is not expected to change substantially.
Past mainline Grand Theft Auto games have earned high review scores. Grand Theft Auto 3 received a 97, San Andreas a 95, GTA 4 a 98 and GTA 5 a 97. Grand Theft Auto 2 scored 70, while the original game has no Metascore. If GTA 6 follows the pattern of the series’ later entries, it could post a score in the 90s, although its eventual reception remains to be seen.
Ocarina of Time may hold the top spot until GTA 6 launches on November 19. Nintendo and Rockstar have both previously had games lead annual review rankings: Tears of the Kingdom’s Switch 2 edition topped the 2025 list, while Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 led in 2018. GTA 4 and GTA 5 were the top-rated games in 2008 and 2013, respectively.
