Microsoft may be changing how players expand the internal storage of its next-generation Xbox console, referred to as Xbox Helix. According to a rumor reported by Digital Foundry, documents examined by the outlet suggest the system could use an M.2 SSD slot instead of proprietary expansion cards.

Xbox Series X|S currently relies on proprietary memory cards for storage expansion. The reported change would bring Helix’s approach closer to the one used by PlayStation 5, while fitting with claims that the new console will have an architecture more similar to a PC.

Digital Foundry’s experts reportedly expect the M.2 slot to be the console’s only upgrade option. The rumor does not indicate that users will be able to add RAM or install a graphics card.

Microsoft has not shared the SSD requirements for Helix, and the report notes that details may emerge in the coming months as the company reveals more about the console. The article also says both Helix and PlayStation 6 may have been quietly delayed to 2028, but offers no confirmation of that possibility.
