The team behind Skyblivion says it is facing potential legal action from a former volunteer over work contributed to the unofficial Oblivion remake project. Project lead Kyle “Rebelzize” Rebel detailed the situation in a video and accompanying written statement.

According to the team, the volunteer left the project after disagreements over the continued use and maintenance of their contributions. The dispute reportedly focused on the Decompilation of parts of that work, which the developers said was necessary to preserve functionality and fix problems after access to the original source repository was revoked.

The Skyblivion team says it ultimately removed the former volunteer’s work entirely in an effort to create a clean break. Developers and other modders then created replacements, with the team also receiving help from Skyrim modders and permissions to integrate existing Skyrim modifications.

Despite being told several times that the contributions had been removed, the former volunteer is allegedly threatening to seek damages of more than €30,000. The team also claims that the legal demands include personal information about multiple volunteers, including their full names and addresses. Rebel said the project would not share that information and described the demands as disproportionate to the dispute.

The developers say they have already consulted legal counsel and have a lawyer available if needed. However, they claim those services would cost €2,500, prompting a request for pro bono assistance from people with experience in intellectual property or GDPR law.

Rebel asked the community not to target or harass the former volunteer and said the team hopes to resolve the matter quickly so it can focus on Skyblivion’s planned release. The project had originally been expected to launch in 2025 before being delayed into 2026.

The dispute follows public disagreement surrounding the project last year, when former volunteer Dee Keyes questioned whether a release in 2025 was achievable. Keyes later responded to the latest statement by saying they had left while expecting their work to remain in Skyblivion and did not want to harm the project’s progress. They also said they understood why the former volunteer was upset but did not understand the decision to demand that the work be removed.
