Avatar: The Last Airbender is known for its emotional moments, and Uncle Iroh’s confrontation with Zuko in the Book Two episode “Lake Laogai” remains one of its most memorable scenes. Iroh urges his nephew to turn inward with two questions: “Who are you, and what do you want?”
By this point, Zuko has spent years chasing the Avatar to regain his status and his father’s approval. While living in Ba Sing Se, he has a chance to build a different life, but learning that Appa is being held in the city draws him back into the Blue Spirit persona and his old pursuit.
Iroh confronts Zuko beneath Lake Laogai, criticizing his impulsive decision and challenging his claim that capturing the Avatar is his destiny. His questions push Zuko to consider whether he is following his own desires or simply obeying expectations imposed by his father, Fire Lord Ozai.
After freeing Appa, Zuko follows Iroh’s advice and drops the Blue Spirit mask into the water. The next episode shows him suffering a severe fever as he struggles with the consequences of his changing identity. The scene marks a turning point in his journey away from the role he has been trying to play.
The moment is also a notable performance by Mako Iwamatsu, Iroh’s original voice actor. It was among the last episodes he recorded before his death in July 2006. Greg Baldwin later took over the role in Book Three and The Legend of Korra.
