The original PlayStation’s startup sound is instantly recognisable: a deep rumble accompanies the Sony logo, followed by a short sequence of notes. Its lasting impression came from a deliberate design that combined atmosphere with a practical purpose.
Sony sound designer Takafumi Fujisawa created the sequence in 1994. In a 2019 interview with the PlayStation Blog, he said he wanted it to capture the feeling of arriving at a cinema just as the lights dim and the show is about to begin.
The sound begins with reassuring tones, then builds and takes on a more mysterious quality. Fujisawa intended the progression to inspire confidence, curiosity and excitement ahead of the game.
The startup also served as a status signal: it let players know the console was working and had read the disc. Fujisawa even devised a sound that would repeat if the system could not load a CD.
Years of hearing the sequence before starting a game helped make it iconic. Its distinctive sound became closely associated with the anticipation of trying something new or returning to a favourite game.
