Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft after 21 years with the company, only three months after she was promoted to chief operating officer of Xbox. Her departure was announced in a memo to Microsoft Gaming employees from Xbox head Asha Sharma, according to The Verge, which reviewed the message.

Sharma said Chiang was leaving Microsoft that day and thanked her for her many years of service to Microsoft Gaming, wishing her well. Microsoft declined to discuss personnel matters when asked about the departure, while Chiang has not publicly given a reason for leaving.

Chiang became Xbox COO in July as part of changes Sharma outlined for the future of the division. Before her promotion, she led Mojang Studios, the developer of Minecraft.

The circumstances behind Chiang’s decision remain unclear. The available information does not establish whether it was personal or related to changes in Microsoft Gaming’s leadership.
