Astragon Entertainment, a simulation game publisher, has confirmed the closure of Astragon Development, the German studio formerly known as Independent Arts Software. According to reports from GamesIndustry.biz, the decision affects more than 40 employees, with the company stating it is currently seeking socially responsible solutions for the workforce. The shutdown is described as part of a strategic realignment within the organization.

Independent Arts was originally founded in Hamm in 1990 by Holger Kuchling and spent three decades working on over 250 games. The studio was particularly recognized for its porting and co-development services for publishers such as Kalypso Media, Daedalic Entertainment, and Wild River Games. In April 2023, Astragon acquired the studio for up to $3.9 million (€3.5m) with the intention of bringing simulation game development in-house and expanding its platform portfolio. This acquisition occurred after Team17, now operating as Everplay Group, purchased Astragon in 2022. Following Kuchling's departure in February 2025, the studio was renamed Astragon Development three months later.

This closure marks the latest reduction at Astragon, following a move in January to exit physical distribution entirely to focus on publishing. The decision also comes shortly after the full release of Seafarer: The Ship Sim in late September. While the title secured over $2 million (€1.8m) in German federal funding, reports indicate that its 1.0 launch attracted significantly fewer players than its early access debut and received mixed user reviews. Despite these challenges, Astragon has confirmed it will continue to provide updates for the game.
