Gearbox has asked Borderlands fans to share what they want from the franchise’s future as the studio explores new character arcs, storylines and a broader direction for the series.
The request follows the completion of Borderlands 4’s first year of downloadable content. Gearbox confirmed that Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue, while saying the team is working on additional Borderlands 4 content planned for next year. The studio did not specify what that content will include beyond those ongoing activities.
Gearbox also said it is taking a wider look at the franchise and wants community input on which characters deserve more attention and which stories should receive a conclusion. The studio encouraged fans to continue sharing feedback on social media and through the Gearbox Devcast.
However, the developer stressed that larger plans will take time and did not announce Borderlands 5 or confirm the name of any future game. Gearbox said it would provide more information when the time is right.
The comments arrive after the Borderlands franchise surpassed 100 million units sold. Borderlands 4 has faced controversy since its September launch, particularly over serious PC performance problems. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously said the technical issues had caused some softness in sales, while expressing confidence that the impact could be recovered over time.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version was also cancelled, with Take-Two saying Gearbox had focused on continued improvements to the game on its existing platforms. Borderlands 4 retains a mixed user rating on Steam, where its concurrent player peak has fallen from more than 300,000 at launch to figures in the four-digit range. Steam data does not include the game’s console audience.
