Jagex has officially announced a new gameplay mode for Old School RuneScape, introducing a hardcore option that mirrors features found in other major MMORPGs. In this mode, players are granted only one life; upon death, the character is permanently lost within the hardcore realm. The only way to continue playing after such an event is to create a new character, while all other aspects of the game, including future content and updates, remain identical to the standard version.
When a character dies in this hardcore mode, the Grim Reaper appears to present the player with two distinct choices. They can either fully reset their progress and begin anew at level one, or they can retain their achievements and transfer the character to the main game to continue playing outside of the hardcore constraints. However, any items not classified as "items kept on death" will be lost permanently.
Accessing this new mode is straightforward, as it functions as a separate realm type available immediately upon launching Old School RuneScape. The feature is live today across all supported platforms, including PC, iOS, and Android. This addition significantly raises the stakes for exploration, making activities like chopping wood in high-level areas or mining in dangerous zones such as the scorpion pit far more risky, with even low-level creatures posing a threat.
This move aligns Old School RuneScape with World of Warcraft: Classic, which introduced similar hardcore servers in 2023. That mode operates on comparable principles, featuring no revival upon death and the option to transfer realms after a character's demise. The success of these servers within the WoW community has been substantial, leading to plans for their inclusion in the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever expansion later this year. Notably, while Forever launches on November 4, it will not feature hardcore mode at release, marking a busy week for the MMORPG genre.
