Yoshinori Kitase has expressed interest in seeing more films or TV series inspired by Final Fantasy, while suggesting that Square Enix is likely to focus primarily on new games and original titles. Kitase, producer of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and director of the original Final Fantasy VII, discussed the possibilities in an interview with IGN at Lucca Comics & Games Festival 2026.

Kitase said the expanded world explored in the Final Fantasy VII remake could provide inspiration for future adaptations. He added that he saw no reason why games or TV series based on Final Fantasy stories could not be made in the future, though he did not outline specific plans.

On the company’s game development priorities, Kitase said Square Enix is more likely to invest in new titles. However, he also described the remake as an example of how creators’ attachment to an older game can lead to new work that introduces it to a different audience. He said there could be other cases in which the company chooses to revisit past projects.

The article identifies Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the third and final game in the remake trilogy, with a release scheduled for April 28, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
