Naoki Hamaguchi has said that Final Fantasy VII Remake was the most challenging game to develop in the trilogy. The project was restarted during production, and the team had to build the development structure and systems that would later support Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

In an interview with mistermv, available on YouTube, Hamaguchi said Square Enix had just 30 developers assigned to Final Fantasy VII Remake when the project restarted. The team then had to establish its full development team and workflow from scratch.

The first game also set the standards for the trilogy’s visuals, gameplay and overall quality. Hamaguchi said those foundations enabled significant improvements during development of the later entries, although the team faced difficulties deciding what quality level would satisfy players.

Tetsuya Nomura was the lead director of Final Fantasy VII Remake, with Hamaguchi and Motomu Toriyama serving as co-directors. Hamaguchi became lead director for Rebirth and Revelation.
